Michael J. Colligan History Project: H.W. Brands
The Michael J. Colligan History Project kicks off another fall season of public programming at Miami University Regionals with renowned historian H. W. Brands. On Thursday, Sept. 7, Brands will speak about President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist John Brown, comparing and contrasting their thoughts, words, and deeds in the struggle for American freedom, at 7 p.m. in Parrish Auditorium on the Hamilton Campus. Beloved by viewers of PBS, the History Channel, and countless documentaries, Brands is the Jack S. Blanton Chair of American History at the University of Texas, Austin. He is the author of more than 30 books on American history, two of which – “Traitor to His Class” and “The First American” – were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. In Brands’ presentation entitled “The Zealot and the Emancipator: John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, and the Struggle for American Freedom,” he investigates how Brown and Lincoln provided opposite answers to the question of how to confront the evil of slavery. Brown embraced violence; Lincoln chose politics. Why? And what were the consequences? After Brands explores the fascinating lives of two American icons, take part in an audience Q & A, book sale, and signing with the author to follow. Since 2000, the Michael J. Colligan History Project has provided nearly 200 free programs exploring American history. “Our series has welcomed celebrated historians ranging from Jon Meacham to Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, showcasing unique talent in Hamilton,” said Matthew Smith, director of public programming at Miami Regionals. The Colligan Project is a joint undertaking of the Colligan Fund Committee of Hamilton Community Foundation and Miami Hamilton, made possible by the generous bequest of Michael J. Colligan. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is strongly encouraged at: MiamiOH.edu/Regionals/RSVP.
